LAST OPERATIONAL BULGARIAN Mi-17 CRASHES, TWO DEAD

Two Bulgarian Air Force (VVS) pilots lost their lives and a flight-technician was seriously injured in a crash of a Mi-17 Hip-H transport helicopter that happened in the evening of 11 June on the territory of the 24th Air Base Krumovo (24-ta aviacionna baza Krumovo), located near the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv.

Killed in the accident were pilots Cap. Plamen Panteleev and Cap. Stoyan Nedelchev while flight-technican Aleksey Kamenov escaped with a non-life threatening injuries.

The accident happened while the aircraft was on a training mission and hovering when suddenly it went out of control and felt on the ground from a very low altitude of between 20 and 50 meters.

The crashed aircraft served VVS since October 1989 and passed its second general overhaul early last year at the Sofia-based TEREM-LETETS aircraft repair plant. Been identified as wearing military identification number 417, the ill-fated helicopter was the last operational Mi-17 in service with VVS.

The fatal Mi-17 crash comes one year after Bulgarian Navy pilot lost his life and two other officers were seriously injured on 9 June 2017 when their Eurocopter AS.565MB Panther multipurpose helicopter (military identification number 902) crashed in the Black Sea following collision with Bulgarian Navy Wielingen-class frigate Drazki 41.
