Five airlines are to participate in an evaluation next year of a unique Israeli security system that can positively identify pilots of aircraft approaching Israeli air space.
Dubbed "Code Positive", the highly classified system was developed by Elbit Systems and will allow Israeli air traffic control to verify that an aircraft heading for Israel is not hostile.
The trial is scheduled to begin in January. If it is successful, "Code Positive" cards will be distributed to all airlines flying to Israel. Pilots that regularly fly to Israel will be enrolled in the system, using a smart card to verify their identity.
Other features of the system have not been released by the country's transport ministry, but a source says that it will give "positive identification under any situation".
Israeli airspace is tightly controlled to avoid any attempts to use it for terror attacks.
