SARAS

SARAS is a multi-role light transport aircraft ideal for feeder airline, executive transport, air ambulance and other community services designed and flight tested by NAL. Currently two prototype aircraft are flying. The SARAS PT1 aircraft, powered by 850HP P&W engines and 5-bladed 85” diameter Hartzell propellers has made 125 flights and has logged around 70 hrs. This was flown in Aero India 2007 during the inaugural flying display and also for public demonstration on all the days. The second prototype with 1200HP engines and 104” diameter propeller has made 23 flights and has logged around 20hrs. Limit load tests have been carried out on SARAS wing successfully. Pressurization test has been conducted on structural test specimen of the SARAS (PT2 has MT propeller) fuselage up to 9.2 psi. Currently, work is progressing in all aspects towards building the weight optimized Production Standard Aircraft (PSA), with a targeted weight reduction of 500kg. PSA is expected to have its first flight in the year 2009.
