Teen gets licensed to fly for 17th birthday
Above, Savannah Weaver walks away from the plane after earning her pilot license.
In 30 years of flight instruction, Lloyd Probst had never had a student receive a private pilot certificate at 17 -- the youngest a person can be tested. But Saturday, he had his first. Millbrook resident Savannah Weaver turned 17 and received her certificate all in the same day. She trained for almost 11 months, she said, to take her test on Saturday. "It's a huge sense of accomplishment," said Savannah, the first in her family to receive a pilot certificate. She began her day at 9 a.m. and after a written exam and a practical test with a Federal Aviation Administration instructor, she landed a little before 1 p.m. Savannah's mother, Anita, was "not at all" nervous, and although her father, Cliff, had a few reservations about his daughter taking flight lessons, he gave in.
