Keilir Aviation Academy - Keflavik, Iceland

Post by brynner »

The Keilir Aviation Academy, Keflavik, Iceland become suddenly very well known in the aviation industry by organizing the most important conference on Eyjafjallajökull and Aviation in September 15-16, 2010.

But why did the Keilir Aviation Academy organize such an important conference? “As an Icelandic pilot school we wanted to invite aviation leaders, experts and policy-makers from all over the world to assemble in Iceland to discuss the lessons learned from the Eyjafjallajökull eruption and how technology, rules, regulations and aviation training must be improved before the next volcano eruption,” said Jon Magnusson, the Conference Manager. “The conference was called to address the many facets of this multi-disciplinary subject that has been identified as the worst disruption by far of European and global air transport since the Second World War”, Jon added.

The Keilir Aviation Academy

When the US air force left the base in Keflavik, Iceland in 2006 then the Keilir Aviation Academy was established in the former NATO base. “As a former NATO base in Iceland, Keflavik International Airport (BIKF) has two 3,000 m runways and is the Icelandic gateway between Europe and the United States. The international air traffic is an added bonus to the pilot training experience. Excellent airline connections from Keflavík to the U.K. give trainee pilots many daily options on flights to London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester and Glasgow. We also offer affordable and excellent housing designed for the US pilots who were at the base,” says Capt. Kári Kárason the Head of Training and B757/767 Captain.

The Keilir Aviation Academy offers professional flight training on brand new Diamond aircraft of the type DA-20, DA-40 and DA-42. Most of our instructors are also very experienced airline pilots,” says Capt. Kárason. “The Diamond aircraft of Keilir are all equipped with avionics enabling them to fly in daylight as well as for night time conditions. The engines of the DA-40 and the DA-42 are highly developed aircraft diesel engines that use jet fuel, making them very fuel efficient and environmentally friendly.

We do not only have Icelandic pilot students but several foreign pilot students, mainly from the U.S. and Europe. We have economical studio apartments with rental rates from as low as 400 EUR per month, including free 24 hour internet service, cable TV, heating, electricity and gym access as well as all essential services on-site perfectly suited for pilot training. We welcome more foreign students,” says Tómas Beck, Chief Flight Instructor and B757/767 First Officer. “Low examination, license and landing fees help to make pilot training in Iceland one of the most economical ways to reach the pilot license. With 24 hours daylight during summertime, the possibilities for assembling hours are increased dramatically,” Tómas adds.

The Keilir Aviation Academy is an approved Flying Training Organization in accordance with JAR-FCL and we offer; PPL - Private Pilot Course; CPL - Commercial Pilot Course (modular flight training); IR - Instrument Rating Course (modular flight training); Class Rating Courses SEP and MEP; ATPL - Modular Theory Course (Distance Learning) and FI Refresher - Flight Instructor Refresher Course. Flight Dispatcher/Flight Operations Officer Course is currently in progress for Air Atlanta Icelandic and training for Aircraft Technicians will start soon,” says Capt. Gudmundur Sigurdsson, Chief Ground Instructor and B747-400 First Officer.

The Keilir Aviation Fleet

The DA-20 Eclipse
As with aviation in general, safety is our number one priority at Keilir Aviation Academy. This made Diamond Aircraft a logical choice. The Diamond aircraft are made of robust and highly durable composite fibers making them a particularly sturdy design, a fact well known to the manufactures of larger modern airlines such as the Boeing 787, constructed mostly of similar composite materials,” says Capt. Kárason.

The DA-42 NG

The DA-42 NG is the only aircraft in this category that is certified for flight into known icing conditions. A very important factor when training in the Icelandic meteorological environment and with our focus on flight safety” says Capt. Kárason who previously served a position as Flight Safety Officer at Icelandair.

The avionics are very advanced and include a digital autopilot, similar to modern day jet airliners. The SVS (Synthetic Vision System) provides optimum situational awareness and is extremely useful in the mountainous areas of Iceland. A flight from our base in Keflavik to Akureyri in northern Iceland takes 1 hour and 10 minutes. The twin engine DA-42 NG can fly on one engine over all mountains and glaciers in Iceland. That is a lot more than similar twin engine trainers can offer. The diesel engine fuel consumption is approximately 23 liters / 5.9 gallons per engine per hour at 70% power. That is close to 40% less fuel per hour than the Piper Seminole, ” says Capt. Kárason.
